The Uniprocessor kernel was dropped because there is no longer a
disadvantage to running an SMP kernel. Once upon a time there was a
benefit to be gained from running it on a system with only one CPU/Core,
but those days have passed.
We included SMP in the Uniprocessor kernel for many months (and all of
the others, actually) and there were no ill effects, so we just retired
the UP kernel.
FreeBSD started including SMP in the Generic kernel by default quite
some time ago, we're just catching up to that change since we tend to
play it safe with such things.
